Excessive temperature differences between grain and the ambient air can lead to moisture loss, while snowfall or freezing temperatures can freeze equipment or cause power outages. Grain spoilage reduces its value and can even pose safety hazards to workers. From a safety perspective, spoiled grain can cause health hazards, especially when grain dust contains mold and bacteria. Furthermore, spoiled grain can bridge or adhere to the walls of grain silos, potentially burying anyone who enters.

"Cold weather itself does not negatively impact grain quality or grain handling safety; the key is to cool the stored grain to the target temperature through ventilation, maintain safe storage moisture content, and monitor the carbon dioxide levels in the stored grain." For grains such as corn, maintaining safe storage moisture content throughout the planned storage period is the most important factor. For example, if corn is to be shipped or used before the end of the cold season, it can be safely stored with a moisture content between 15% and 16%, provided the grain temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.44 degrees Celsius) and the average ambient temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). Once the ambient temperature rises, especially when daytime temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.56 degrees Celsius), safe storage requires a moisture content below 15% and a grain temperature below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). "When the average ambient temperature is above 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius), the safe storage moisture content drops to 14%, and the average grain temperature is below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.56 degrees Celsius).

Using aeration cooling to cool corn to around 30 degrees Fahrenheit (-1.11 degrees Celsius) and soybeans to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius), with two to three temperature-controlled cooling cycles, minimizes losses and maintains the moisture content required by the target market. Soybeans do not need to be cooled to the typically recommended low temperatures as corn. Cooling dried soybeans to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius)..." (A certain temperature) can reduce losses and electricity costs. A good grain silo seal can prevent moisture and pests from damaging the grain. Upgrades can be considered, such as installing insulated grain silo covers or improving weather protection. Grain silo sensors can be used to measure the moisture content between different layers; if the moisture content varies significantly, ventilation settings can be adjusted or the grain can be redistributed. Most grain spoilage is caused by excessively high winter storage temperatures, so cooling and maintaining low grain temperatures is crucial. Cooling should be carried out on days with no precipitation and when the outdoor temperature is 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the grain temperature. The goal of cooling is not to freeze the grain, but to cool it sufficiently to slow down or stop insect activity and mold growth.
